We have just received news that people booked on the flight to Jamaica are being moved. From our past experience this indicates people are going to be taken to the plane soon.
These are people already experiencing great distress , anxiety and ill from worry and with distraught families wondering if they will ever see their parent, child, partner or grandchild ever again.
The system of transfering people is brutal, when they are taken from the the removal centres they are shackled, they are handcuffed to a security guard on each side, taken in the dark & middle of the night to an unknown airfield & they remain shackled and cuffed with a security guard attached on either side until arrival in Jamaica. They are silenced if they speak out & unable to say goodbye to loved ones. It is fightening.
Today campaigners with legal representatives were successful in getting a few people off the flight including Twane Morgan, whose campaign I have been leading. This is great news but this flight should not be going at all.
Our collective campaigning including political pressure led to an emergency debate in parliament where MP David Lammy accused the Government of pandering to far right racism. He made a point I made in my article in The Guardian which I shared in yesterday's update that without concluding an independent review of the Windrush scandal how could the government know they would not make more mistakes.
Sign the Petition: Conduct an Independent Public Inquiry into the Windrush Scandal
Shockingly & disgracefully the Home Secretary responded by falsely stating about everybody being deported on the flight " All of them have been convicted of serious crimes, such as rape, murder, firearms offences and drug trafficking."
Campaigners have compiled a briefing of those to be deported and these suggested crimes are not there. It would seem that the Home Secretary sought to reduce public support & sympathy. It was good to see The Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow state that this was an important debate impacting vulnerable people but he also said that he expected it to be raised time and time again.
That should not need to be the case. These inhumane wholesale removal of human beings need to stop.
Please tweet urgently to @sajidjavid @ukhomeoffice copying in your MPs calling for this flight to be stopped.
