We welcome news of the new, more relaxed visa regime that the Indian and Pakistan Foreign Ministers are expected to sign at their meeting in Islamabad on Saturday to replace the outdated visa regime of 1974. According to reports, the new agreement will allow multiple-entry and police reporting-free visas for businessmen, allowing them to visit five cities instead of three as at present. It will exempt elderly people from police reporting, allow common people from either country to visit three earmarked cities instead of one, and introduce a visa-on-arrival facility at Wagah for senior citizens (65+ years) and children, and tourist visas for groups of 10 to 50 people coming through registered tour operators. It will also allow movement across LoC to enable Kashmiri pilgrims visit shrines on either side. We welcome these developments as a welcome first step. We urge the governments to stay the course, and meet the other demands in our petition.
