Expose Global Election Interference: Regulate the IDU and Protect Democracy Everywhere

We, the undersigned, are raising the alarm about a serious threat to democracy—one that crosses borders and operates in the shadows.

The International Democrat Union (IDU) is an alliance of right-wing political parties around the world, including Canada’s Conservative Party. This organization is not merely a network of shared ideas—it is a hub of political coordination that enables interference in domestic politics across multiple countries.

The IDU has played a role in exporting polarizing tactics, disinformation, and authoritarian-aligned strategies from one nation to another. Its members include parties and leaders that have dismantled democratic institutions, targeted journalists, suppressed voters, and eroded human rights.

Canada must not be complicit—nor a victim—of this kind of global political manipulation. Foreign political interference is wrong no matter where it comes from or where it goes. If we condemn authoritarian regimes for meddling in our elections, we must also reject any participation in international political networks that influence or destabilize other democracies in return.

We call for full transparency and urgent action. Specifically, we demand that:

Elections Canada publicly investigate and report on all affiliations between Canadian political parties and international organizations like the IDU.
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs launch hearings into foreign and transnational influence in Canadian politics.
All Canadian political parties disclose their international affiliations, collaborations, and any associated funding or support.
The Commissioner of Canada Elections assess whether any activities associated with the IDU violate Canadian electoral law.
The Government of Canada introduce binding transparency regulations on international political cooperation—whether inbound or outbound—to protect the integrity of our democracy and prevent Canada from being used to undermine democracy abroad.

Canadians deserve a political system free from covert foreign or transnational interference, and we must ensure our nation plays no part in undermining democratic values anywhere else in the world.

Sign now to demand accountability, transparency, and protection of democracy—here and everywhere.
