"We are butterflies!" Nobel Peace Prize for Francesca Albanese

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, has become the official target of Israel’s smear machine. This includes paid Google Ads and defamatory websites created by the Israeli government, as well as diplomatic retaliation from the United States, with Trump announcing, through Secretary of State Rubio, individual sanctions against the jurist.

Albanese is “guilty” of having exposed—through her reports as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories—the crimes of the Netanyahu government and the business of genocide, precisely and methodically naming the companies, including Amazon, Alphabet, and Palantir, that profit from Israel’s war economy.

Albanese is “guilty” of simply fulfilling her role at the United Nations. Those who attack her—or remain silent facing the attacks against her—are implicitly delegitimizing and undermining the very function of the United Nations in defending human rights at international level.

Meanwhile, as an Italian citizen entrusted with an international mandate is being assaulted and threatened, the government remains silent and continues its complicity with Israel.

In the silence of institutions—and while calling on them to take responsibility for the roles they hold—we must all become the media bodyguards of Francesca Albanese and of International Law, which is continuously violated by Israel and the United States.

We call for Francesca Albanese to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and we appeal to those who can propose candidates: current and former members of the Nobel Committee and its advisors, members of parliament and government officials, members of the Hague Court of Arbitration and International Court of Justice, members of the International Peace Bureau and the Institut de Droit International, and university professors of law, political science, history, and philosophy, as well as former Nobel Peace Prize laureates—to include the Italian jurist in the list of nominees.

"Alone we are as fragile as butterfly wings, but united—strong and in solidarity—we can create a storm. (...)
It is in the interconnectedness of struggles for emancipation and freedom—whether individual or collective—that we must rediscover our 'solidum.' Together, we can face any challenge.
So let’s beat our wings, let’s make a storm, or better yet, as we say where I come from, let’s make ammuìna!"
— from Albanese’s book "Quando il mondo dorme" (“When the World Sleeps”)
