Is Home Rule the only realistic alternative to independence for Scotland?

Isn't it curious that all the supposed "uncertainty" which was supposed to make independence unthinkable turns out to be a non-issue when it comes to the perpetual constitutional tinkering by which it is hoped to preserve the structures of power, privilege and patronage which define the British state?
