Hi everyone.
Tyneside Cinema today publish some of the findings from the 2020 review into allegations of sexual harassment, assault and bullying in the workplace.
First to say, that this review would never have happened if victims and survivors had not made their experiences public because they had already tried for years to go through the "proper" channels at the cinema. We are thankful to them and sad that they've had to be the catalyst for this.
Secondly, the review would not have happened as it did without your support in signing and sharing. Thank you so very much, for lending us your voice in what is a truly difficult year for everyone.
The key findings are:
- Sexual harassment has persisted over many years and has not been properly addressed.
- Bullying and a lack of respect have been endured, sometimes daily and for long periods of time.
- Staff have been exposed to unnecessary safety risks in the course of their work.
Ultimately, the review team said:
"The Board of Trustees have failed in their duty to delegate and monitor their responsibilities appropriately and this has resulted in staff not being adequately protected from harm."
There is a video attached, which is 30 minutes long and goes into more detail.
Whilst we are pleased to see this review confirm all the experiences of victims and survivors, we are disappointed not to see the entire board removed given the admission of their abject failure.
We will be reviewing the 74 recommendations and we'll certainly have some questions. If you've got questions, we'll be creating a collaborative response, so you can talk directly to us here.
Please remember what it took to get here. Survivors of sexual violence had to publicly share their harrowing experiences in order for Tyneside Cinema management to pay attention and conduct a review.
