At the foot of Tokyo Tower stands a rare oasis in the heart of the city: the garden and traditional architecture of Tokyo Shiba Tofuya Ukai.

This 6,600-square-meter garden, with ponds, stone lanterns, and historic buildings relocated from across Japan, has long been cherished by both Tokyo residents and visitors from around the world.

But the restaurant is scheduled to close due to the expiration of its land lease, and the future of the site has not yet been decided. If redevelopment proceeds, this unique green space and cultural landscape could be lost forever.

There is still time to protect it. We are calling for the preservation of this garden and its buildings, and asking that the site not be replaced by yet another high-rise condominium or large commercial complex.

――――――――――

Did you know that at the very foot of Tokyo Tower there is a beautiful garden filled with traditional Japanese architecture?

Tokyo Shiba Tofuya Ukai is a special place: within a 6,600-square-meter garden surrounded by ponds, stone lanterns, and trees stand traditional buildings relocated from different parts of Japan.

It has long been cherished as a rare space where people can experience Japanese architecture and garden culture while still being in the center of Tokyo.

For residents of Tokyo and visitors from around the world alike, the scenery of this garden with Tokyo Tower rising above it has become a memorable and beloved sight.

Yet the restaurant is now scheduled to close due to the expiration of its land lease, and the future use of the land has not been announced.

If this garden and its buildings disappear, a precious green space and a unique architectural landscape at the foot of Tokyo Tower will be lost forever.

Protecting Tokyo’s Green Spaces and Urban Landscape

In recent years, many historic buildings and green spaces in Tokyo have disappeared under the banner of redevelopment.

Gardens and tree-filled spaces in the city center are not only part of Tokyo’s charm—they also play an important role in protecting the urban environment, helping to mitigate summer heat and provide breathing space within the city.

Yet in recent years, some such places have been lost or reduced as redevelopment projects replace them with high-rise condominiums and large commercial complexes.

The garden and architecture of Tokyo Shiba Tofuya Ukai represent one of the distinctive traditional landscapes that still remain in central Tokyo.

Protecting this place is not simply about preserving a restaurant.

It is about:

• protecting Tokyo’s green spaces
• preserving the city’s history and cultural heritage
• passing on a landscape that reflects Tokyo’s identity to future generations

Tokyo should not be a city defined only by ever more skyscrapers.

It should be a city where greenery, culture, and urban life coexist.

Our Requests

We respectfully ask the following:

1. To Tokyo Tower Co., Ltd. and Nippon Denpatō Co., Ltd.
Preserve the garden and buildings of Tokyo Shiba Tofuya Ukai, and continue to utilize the site as a restaurant, cultural space, or garden.

2. To the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Minato Ward
Consider measures to preserve this valuable space, including the possibility of acquiring the land if necessary so that it can remain as a garden or public park.

3. Do not approve redevelopment that would damage the landscape, such as high-rise condominiums or large-scale commercial complexes.

There Is Still Time

At this moment, the future of this site has not yet been decided.

That is why it is so important to make our voices heard now.

Let us preserve this beautiful garden and architecture at the foot of Tokyo Tower for future generations.

Please support this petition.
