"The Australian Platypus Conservancy has for a long time listed Fernglade Reserve at Burnie as one of its recommended places for both domestic and international visitors to spot platypus. However, compared to many of the other locations on our list, Fernglade is under-promoted as an ecotourism destination. The recent death of three platypus in an illegal trap in Emu Creek near to Fernglade also highlights that the reserve is under-resourced in terms of its conservation management. In addition, research and monitoring in relation to the reserve’s platypus population is currently almost totally lacking. This means the loss of valuable opportunities to learn more about the species in general and the dynamics of a population living in close proximity to human activity in particular." Geoff Willaims OAM Director of the Australian Platypus Conservancy
