Save Lewisham Shopping Centre Campaign Update.
We have collected over 2,400 signatures and Lewisham Council is getting nervous. Mayor Brenda Dacres wrote an opinion piece for The London Evening Standard that misrepresented the aims of our campaign and pointed the finger at us as being the cause of Lewisham’s housing crisis which makes no sense- our campaign was launched because of the lack of social housing in the redevelopment proposal.
We have gone door to door in the immediate vicinity of the shopping centre and have not found a resident who is in favour of the redevelopment plans. People we speak to are not against change, but they would like to see change that benefits the community and that includes social housing so that Lewisham residents don’t continue to get priced out.
Building luxury flats instead of social housing in the centre of Lewisham will change the character of the market and will make Lewisham less affordable. This is social cleansing.
Please join our rally outside Lewisham Town Hall tonight, Wednesday 26 November, at 6:30PM. We want to show Lewisham Council that the public does not want to see our city centre sacrificed so that property developers can increase profits. We don’t want Lewisham councillors to sell out their constituents.
We will be entering the Town Hall after the rally to ask questions to Lewisham Councillors at the full council meeting.
