Firstly, let me take this opportunity to thank you all for your support. Crews at Balmossie Fire Station have proudly served our community for years and we hope to continue to do so for decades to come.
The number of people who have signed our petition is truly inspiring, and all of us who work at Balmossie thank you sincerely.
SFRS have recently opened their public consultation regarding the “options for change” that they have identified across Scotland, effectively a huge package of cuts to frontline firefighting services. Balmossie being permanently closed or downgraded to on-call only are the two options.
Please click the link to the consultation below to register your opposition to the permanent closure of Balmossie Fire Station. The consultation is open for 12 weeks and we need as many people as possible to oppose the plans. The following should be borne in mind when submitting your objection:
1. The closure of Balmossie presents an unacceptable increase in response times to thousands of people in Broughty Ferry, East Dundee and beyond. Therefore, a dangerous increase in risk to public and firefighter safety.
2. There are also two ambulances based in the station which will have to be rehoused if the station was to close.
I urge you all to fully engage with the consultation, lodging your objection to a significant reduction in safety for a huge swathe of Broughty Ferry and Dundee’s rapidly growing population.
Together we can prevent the increase in risk to our communities and ensure we have a locally based fire station available to respond to our life threatening emergencies.
We are here for you. I believe you are here for us too.
Please see below a link to the consultation, share this far and wide along with the petition where you can post your views.
There is also an explanation below on these cuts.

Here at Balmossie Fire Station, we believe you as the public should be consulted on the cuts made to Dundee in 2023 as they can explain how these cuts have negatively impacted the local area. They should reverse the change made to cut the Fire Engine at Kingsway East without impacting any further cover. PKAD lost 35 Firefighter posts in 2023.
Scottish Fire and Rescue's own figures show a continued overall increase across all three Service Delivery Areas to median response times to life risk incidents
• The maths is simple. Reduced budgets = cuts to firefighter numbers = increased response times = increased risk to the public.
The FBU demands:
1. No further cuts to firefighter numbers,
2. No cuts to fire cover at any time of the day or night,
3. Safe crewing levels,
4. Investment in fire stations and
5. Increased and sustained real terms investment from the Scottish Government
Thank you for your time and continued support.
