Hawai'i Island Animal Welfare Supporters -
Voices heard:
Over the summer, passionate volunteers led five (5) Island-wide meetings, amplifying community concerns about animal welfare. We've distilled these voices into a clear report which was delivered and communicated to Council leadership and the County Animal Control and Protection Agency (ACPA). A summary of the top priorities, consolidated from all Island districts, is presented in the attached picture.
During the Island-wide meetings, the creation of a community-based Animal Welfare Task Force was presented. Hawai’i Island Pets Alive subsequently spoke with individuals interested in participating in the Task Force and met with ACPA and Council leadership regarding the proposal.
As mentioned in our previous post, there is a hearing scheduled on February 6, 2024, with ACPA in front of a Hawai’i County Committee regarding the status of the Agency and its role within our community. We will share more information on the hearing as soon as it becomes available.
In conjunction with this upcoming hearing and our prior meetings, we are awaiting responses from County leadership to pin down details of our next steps . . .
Action, not apathy:
Animal welfare on Hawai'i Island is still in crisis, and we refuse to wait. Unanswered calls, closed shelters, and animals left to suffer will not define our future. Our first goal? Empowering communities through partnerships and programs!
We will be sharing details of next steps as they emerge. Please stay tuned and get ready to roll up your sleeves!
