HBD, MLK! Come out Mon., 1/20, to see Don’t Mute DC's float in the MLK Day Parade. Meet us at 11:30 a.m. on Good Hope Road SE, DC for live music by Frank Sirius & Co., The First Ladies of Go-Go, TCB and TOB! We just launched new website, www.dontmutedc.com  to kick off another year of music and activism with a new campaign: #MakeGoGoForever. Please follow us on our new Instagram and Twitter: @MakeGoGoForever for official updates on social during the parade. We are just getting started. We have so much in store for 2020.

Last year, the Don't Mute DC collective of advocates, go-go musicians and partners produced 16 cultural activations to remind folks why go-go matters in the battle against the most intense gentrification in the United States. There is still so much to do:

B23-0317 Legislation to “Make Go-Go the Official Music of Washington, D.C.”

While we are thrilled that the Council of DC’s is poised to approve legislation, the so-called “DontMuteDC,” “Make Go-Go the Official Music of DC,” bill introduced by Councilman Kenyan McDuffie and others, there is still no funding attached to the plan. Upon signing the legislation, Mayor Muriel Bowser will have 240 days to develop a plan to support and preserve go-go music and allocate funding for implementation.

DMDC has been holding meetings with musicians, sound engineers, educators and other cultural entrepreneurs who comprise go-go’s multimillion-dollar local industry to come up with a plan for preserving and growing the local industry. This is an opportunity for the city to atone for go-go’s past criminalization and neglect, and its exclusion from D.C.’s arts, tourism and cultural industries. The collective seeks public investments in supporting the next generation of musicians and cultural entrepreneurs.

KENNEDY CENTER “Culture Caucus”

Don’t Mute DC has been selected by the John F. Kennedy Center’s “Reach” center’s inaugural “Culture Caucus” of nearly 30 artists and arts organizations who will activate the REACH Center. The first of our four activations this year will take place Feb. 8, 2020. We will screen two 15-minute documentaries on the Don’t Mute DC Call to Action Conference and the Go-Go Awards, and invite feedback for plans for 2020.

GO-GO MUSEUM
