A quick background on the campaign:
Florida currently has multiple preemption laws that prevent local governments from regulating or banning single-use plastics. These laws not only threaten the health of our unique marine ecosystems but also affect human health and limit local communities' ability to address plastic pollution. The first of these laws was enacted in 2008, with the most recent passed in 2019.
As a Marine Plastics Ambassador with EarthEcho International, I am leading this campaign to encourage the repeal of Florida's plastic preemption laws while partnering with environmental organizations across the state to educate and inspire action.
The petition currently has 213 signatures!
The next goal is 500 signatures, but the more people who support, the more chance of a successful campaign. I just got back from Washington, D.C. after spending three days completing an advocacy workshop and Hill Day on Capitol Hill! I've included some pictures below, but this was such a cool experience. Along with the other Florida ambassadors and one ambassador from North Carolina, we met with staffers from the offices of Senator Rick Scott, Rep. Brian Mast, Rep, Mike Hardopolis, Rep. Gus Bilirakis, and Rep. Deborah Ross. As a group, we advocated for reducing plastics through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), limiting single-use plastics, and discussing the health impacts plastics have on humans.
