I am someone who experienced Europe before the Union. I remember when armies guarded the borders and the meeting and exchange between peoples was limited. Thanks to the European Union, all that has changed. For this reason, I would like to propose that May 9th, the day of the Schuman Declaration that marked the beginning of European cooperation, be declared a public holiday throughout Europe. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of European unity, a bulwark of democratic, civilised values and peaceful coexistence between peoples. According to the Eurobarometer 2021, 71% of European citizens believe that the EU is a good guardian of peace (source: Eurobarometer). By creating a public holiday, we hope that citizens can rediscover and renew their sense of belonging to the European Union. Sign this petition to celebrate unity and peace in Europe.
