Petition updateRenaming Moreland: Give Our Community A Say

Renaming MorelandMoreland, Australia
Jun 30, 2022

This week Moreland City Council and Mayor Mark Riley said they received a "huge" and "record" amount of engagement from residents about the renaming.

Council publicly responded that those opposed were counted on the basis of knowing that you did not tick a naming option and wrote "other comments". Hardly fair.

Despite attempts by council to promote voting, only 7.36% responded. This is lower than in 1994 when residents voted on whether to keep Moreland or choose an Indigenous name. 57% voted in favour of Moreland back then. That survey got a 9.19% response rate.

This Sunday council will try and rubber stamp the new name.

But there is one person who can stop this and that is Hon Melissa Horne State MP and new Local Government Minister.

Call her office on (03) 9399 9022 to share that you are unhappy with the way Moreland City Council has run this process.

Demand the Minister investigate this and stop the approval of renaming until the community get a fair say.

And call for the Minister to demand that council disclose the cost of this project in its budget as a individual line item for transparency.

It's time to act. Call Melissa Horne today.

PS: You can also email, but a phone call will get the Minister's attention the most. Email is melissa.horne@parliament.vic.gov.au
