James Taylor needs to stick to the ministry and Biblical principles and not support the demolition of African American historical schools and heritage. Mrs. Walker's mother was a midwife and resided in Powhatan. Ms. Draper would not want to see the children that she brought into this world educated by the likes of James Taylor. We will not have our history thrown away like trash 🗑️. Let us make him part of our past history.
Mrs. Cynthia Walker of western Powhatan Lakes Road was married to Maggie Walker’s grandson.
Mrs. Cynthia Walker was a public school teacher in Powhatan for many years.
It is an insult to the entire community of Powhatan, central Virginia, and the Commonwealth at large for Dr. Taylor to promote a blatantly racist agenda to destroy and erase the original lower school and the original Hugh economics building at historic Pocahontas.
The school board needs to turn the vacant historic space that Dr. Taylor, Mrs. Wade, and Mrs. Smith want to destroy back over to the county supervisors.
We need to stand firm and demanding that our communities history not be destroyed and disrespected.
Historic Pocahontas is a meaningful part of the early African-American educational heritage of Powhatan County and represents our community’s shared history and shared humanity.
It is a slap in the face to history for Dr. Taylor, Mrs. Wade, and Mrs. Smith to promote this blatantly racist agenda as members of the county school board.
Additionally, it is fiscally Irresponsible to use borrowed public tax dollars with interest on $900,000 that Powhatan taxpayers have been paying interest on since July 2025.
The contract to destroy Pocahontas was approved by a four to one vote on June 24, 2025 as a 400+ page contract without a lawyer present.
The school board relied on a non-lawyer staff member, Mr. Benway, to answer questions about the financial obligations and the specific terms of the contract.
Many of us in the audience at the meeting June 24, 2025 were baffled by this illogical action by the school board members who voted to support the contract and completely ignored the will of the public.
In the opinion of those community members in attendance at the meeting, the slideshow presented by Mr. Benway was misrepresented to the school board members in terms of the specific dollar amounts, and the true financial and fiscal impact on all of the taxpayers of this community.
Powhatan taxpayers just shouldered a 17% tax increase and higher local real estate assessments.
The last thing that our community needs is a school board pursuing a blatantly racist agenda that should never have been considered in the first place.
There have been numerous public hearings and meetings to do with this misguided and insulting proposal.
The only people to speak and support of this racist agenda are Dr. Taylor, Mrs. Wade, and Mrs. Smith.
Three county planning commissioners voted to recommend approval of the demolition permit to the county supervisors.
They did not give detailed reasons for their support of this plan.
The five member elected board of supervisors for our community has rejected this racist agenda by a unanimous vote to deny the demolition permit for historic Pocahontas.
Why are Dr. Taylor, Mrs. Wade, and Mrs. Smith paying high dollar predatory lawyers from Sands Anderson law firm to appeal the denial of the demolition permit?
