Recognize Tulu as an official language in Keralam (Kasaragod)
समस्या
Growing up in the vibrant district of Kasaragod, I have witnessed firsthand the rich tapestry of cultures and languages that coexist here. A significant part of this cultural diversity is the Tulu-speaking community. Despite our deep historical roots and cultural contributions to the region, administrative recognition for Tulu remains absent, creating barriers for thousands of Tulu speakers who call Kasaragod home.
Currently, government services, official documents, and public announcements are predominantly in Malayalam, which, while a beautiful language in its own right, does not cater to the needs of all residents. Tulu speakers face difficulties in accessing vital information that affects their everyday lives—from understanding government notices to filling out forms, and even engaging with public services. This linguistic gap marginalizes a significant portion of Kasaragod's populace, making it challenging for them to fully participate in their own governance.
According to recent demographic studies, Tulu is spoken by over 1.8 million people, with a substantial number residing in Kasaragod. Recognizing Tulu as an additional administrative language can bridge these gaps and ensure inclusive governance. This initiative would pave the way for the creation of bilingual forms, notices, and public information materials, making government services more accessible and fostering a more inclusive community. Moreover, this recognition would not undermine Malayalam's official status; rather, it would enrich Kasaragod's cultural fabric by acknowledging and honoring its diverse linguistic landscape.
It is crucial for the Kerala government to acknowledge and uphold the heritage and rights of its Tulu-speaking citizens. By taking this step, we are not only celebrating the linguistic diversity of Kasaragod but also strengthening the fabric of unity in diversity that India is known for.
We urge the Government of Kerala to recognize Tulu as an additional official language in Kasaragod district. This recognition is not just a symbolic gesture, but a necessary action towards linguistic equality, cultural preservation, and enhanced civic engagement.
Join us in our effort to make Kasaragod a truly inclusive district. Sign the petition today to support the recognition of Tulu, ensuring that all voices in our community are heard and respected.
