ASADA and the AFL allowed AOD-9604 speculation to go ‘animalistic’ for six and a half months until AFL360 aired on Tuesday Aug 20, 2013. In an extract from the AFL360 show, Gerard Whateley discusses the treatment of AOD-9604 with a furious Mark Robinson: Robinson: Why have we be lead to believe then, that it (AOD-9604) was a banned substance? Whateley: Actually, that should be the source of a Government inquiry. The Sports Minister should demand an answer tomorrow from ASADA, and ASADA should provide its public statement that it said it would make. It should provide that by the opening of business tomorrow. …………. Robinson: The AFL knew is was not prohibited. Jobe Watson got absolutely smashed for two, two and a half weeks before Andrew Demetriou came out and said there was an issue with its status. No wonder Tim Watson, the Essendon champion and father of Jobe, Gerard, absolutely no wonder Tims really really angry, and he's angry with the AFL, because they let his son just get absolutely verbally smashed, and spoken about, and they knew the status of this drug. The AFL has let down, let down in my opinion, a, the Brownlow medallist of Essendon, and I think in some ways, the Essendon playing list. Do you remember this? Contrast this to an immediate investigation, action, and numerous public statements taken against someone who threw a banana at the footy. Back to the player's welfare. The AFL media went ‘animalistic’ for six and a half months. Six and a half months. Players were verbally abused and booed. The presumption of innocence was lost. How could this happen during a confidential investigation? Who should be held accountable? Interestingly, the word ‘integrity’ appeared in the 2013 AFL Annual Report 65 times that year. Building up trust in any organisation requires a great deal of effort. Once trust is compromised, it will take a long time to grow back — if ever.
