Some background on the Marylake LTC development proposal:
The original application by the proponent in December 2020 was for a Long-Term Care facility, plus a hotel, a conference centre and a banquet hall! That was turned down by King Township council with the Mayor saying: "I am proud of King as a steward of the Moraine; as the proposal violates the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, I cannot endorse it.” Fast forward to February 2021, and the proponent comes back with an application to Council for just the LTC facility. And suddenly Planning Staff decide that the site is zoned for LTC, but without any evidence except for a letter from the proponent; no Township legal opinion or LTC expert opinion. To add to all this, the King Chamber of Commerce has been pushing very hard for this LTC facility development. An email response I received to my objection to their misleading ad in the King Weekly Sentinel newspaper included these comments: "I will list below why we chose to support the development: Healthcare, Senior care, possible Hospice care, possible Women’s Shelter, Eco Tourism (eco-tourism winery), Agricultural use, Animal Rehab..." That is all way beyond a LTC home. We know that this Provincial government will use hospitals and LTC facilities as a wedge to open up the Greenbelt and the Oak Ridges Moraine for commercial and housing developments. For developers "land is cheap" in the Greenbelt. That is what this is really about. That's what they're after! Let us not be fooled!
