E-petition calling on CCC to adopt a Biodiversity Emergency Declaration - please sign and share

Dear all,

We hope this finds everyone well.

We are continuing our work on the campaign to save Old Park and extend the SSSI to protect the site from the dual threats of a bypass and further development. We will present our case to Natural England towards the end of this year and in to 2024 and keep you updated on any developments.

In the meantime, we are looking at additional opportunities to protect the biodiversity of Canterbury.

In 2019, the Council adopted the Climate Change Emergency Declaration. A second, new e-petition has just been submitted calling on CCC to adopt a Biodiversity Emergency Declaration. If the Council adopts a declaration of this nature, it will send out a strong signal that it intends to tackle the biodiversity crisis head on. Both declarations will reinforce eachother and act as a catalyst for district councils across Kent to do the same, having a powerful multiplier effect.

If the e-petition gets just 1,000 signatures within the next four weeks, it will automatically trigger a debate on the subject at the Council’s next meeting on 20 July.

The petition could prove critically important in years to come in protecting our district’s precious habitats, species, open spaces and green corridors, such as that which you have all supported at Old Park.

We would be grateful if you could sign the petition and encourage others (family, friends, colleagues and networks) to do so. It’s very easy to do! The signatory just needs to live or work in the district in order to be eligible to do so.

To sign the petition, just click on the link below and select ‘Sign ePetition’ under ePetition details:

Many thanks for your continued support and for helping to make a difference.
