Petition updateAction for AfghanistanA year since the fall of Kabul - Vigils around Australia
Afghanistan-Australian Advocacy Network
Aug 14, 2022

Monday, August 15, marks one year since Kabul fell to the Taliban.

There will be vigils held around Australia in commemoration of this tragic event and call on the Australian government to fulfil its moral obligation to the people of Afghanistan.

To find out more information about where the nearest vigil to you is click here.

A year ago you joined 190,000 others in signing this petition in support of the Action For Afghanistan campaign last year.

Over the last year, the situation in Afghanistan has gotten significantly worse, with civilian casualties, extrajudicial killings, restrictions on women and girls’ rights, and the ongoing targeting and persecution of minorities including Hazaras and Sikhs.

With your support, we got the former Morrison government only committed to 16,500 visas and this was spaced over 4 years

But more needs to be done. Over 211,100 people from Afghanistan have applied for humanitarian protection so far.

Australia has a moral obligation to provide at least 20,000 additional emergency humanitarian visas immediately for people from Afghanistan.

For those already in Australia, we must now we must make sure that applications are processed quickly and people from Afghanistan are given the support they need.

There are still thousands of people from Afghanistan in Australia kept on temporary visas, unable to rebuild their lives and prevented from reuniting with family. Permanent protection must be offered.

We are looking forward to seeing you over the coming days.

Yours in solidarity,

Arif and Batoor, for the #ActionForAfghanistan campaign
