"What we learnt and seen from the history of Pulau Melaka and the recently-abandoned Melaka Gateway project. The various projects planned and then abandoned for this area adjacent to central Melaka have been a 30-year nightmare for numerous investors. The place is now a ghost town, immigrants pit, and maybe a druggy hideout. 

"We are not totally against development – no city can stand still – but the ambitious plans for the M-WEZ need to be carefully considered in the light of Melaka Rakyat livings and Melaka’s historic city role. As the New Straits Times argued in an editorial last year, as a UNESCO heritage site ‘it is not just old Melaka town which should be considered worth preserving….We need to save Melaka’s marine ecosystem” (25 June 2020).
