FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OLMA Preservation Coalition Formed to Save School from Closure
A group of dedicated alumnae, parents, and friends have come together to form the OLMA Preservation Coalition, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charity (status pending) with the mission of re-establishing the financial viability of Our Lady of Mercy Academy and allowing it to continue its important work of educating young women.
The Coalition was established in response to the announcement of the school's closure and is committed to protecting Our Lady of Mercy Academy and preserving the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy to educate young women. The school, founded in 1928 by the Sisters of Mercy (Brooklyn), has a rich history of providing quality education and fostering leadership, service, and Catholic faith among generations of young women.
One of the coalition leaders is Dawn Cerrone, who resigned as the athletic director of Our Lady of Mercy Academy to join the coalition. Cerrone, whose two daughters graduated from the academy, said she felt compelled to act to save the school that has shaped her life and career.
"Our Lady of Mercy Academy is more than just a school, it is a family, a community, and a legacy," Cerrone said. "It is a place where girls are empowered to achieve their dreams and make a positive difference in the world. I am honored to join the coalition and work with other passionate and committed individuals who share the same vision and love for the academy."
The Coalition's board is comprised of dedicated individuals, including President Jeanette Miller Dowd, Vice President Dawn Cerrone, Secretary Lisbeth Finnerty.
The coalition invites the public to join them for a press conference on Monday, January 22nd, at 7 p.m., outside of Our Lady of Mercy Academy, located at 815 Convent Road, Syosset, NY. The coalition will share more details about their plans and goals and answer questions from the media and the community.
