Poaching isn't the only enemy to elephants and other species. Human development also has deadly consequences. Tragically, "more than a dozen pygmy elephants (have been) found dead and possibly poisoned in Malaysian forest reserves slated to be converted into plantations".
There are only an estimated 1200 of these elephants in the world. In addition to these rare elephants, Sumatran Rhinoceros, Orangutans and many other endangered species are threatened by our seemingly benign consumption in the west of such products as palm oil and lumber. Often these products are labeled "sustainably grown" for our guilt free consumption, but in fact, as this article suggests, they are anything but.
