Greetings #SaveBUCKY Supporters,
I haven't posted on the petition itself in awhile. A lot has happened so I wanted to give you an update.
First thing I want to tell everyone is THANK YOU. The second thing is YOUR VOICE IS BEING HEARD!
I've had a lot of great conversations with many of you who are in full support of what we are doing. I want you to know that there is movement on this and Bucky isn't dead by a longshot! I have had the pleasure of speaking with members of the Edinburg City Council. They are 100% behind this effort to preserve the Bronc nickname. I do know that Guy Bailey is aware of the campaign. He has heard our voices and is listening.
I wanted to pass on a lot of the news to you and keep you updated on media appearances as well.
Here are a couple of things.
1. The City of Edinburg unanimously passed a resolution to urge the UT System and new UT-RGV president Guy Bailey to preserve the Bronc name. KGBT covered that story with this here.. http://www.valleycentral.com/news/story.aspx?id=1091593#.VAkm1kjD87A
2. I have been told that on the agenda for the upcoming Hidalgo County Commissioners Court that a similar resolution will be discussed and hopefully passed unanimously as well....Here is The Monitor's story on the issue: http://www.themonitor.com/news/local/county-court-to-discuss-ut-rgv-bronc-preservation/article_dfb849c8-34a9-11e4-a914-001a4bcf6878.html
3. We have received other media coverage as well, including from both the Pan American and from the UTB Collegian. Both Links to stories are below.
UTB:http://utbcollegian.com/index.php/news/local/item/3032-utrgv-mascot
UTPA: http://www.panamericanonline.com/news/out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new-3/
I want to thank everyone who has donated to the cause. I have some students on the ground who will be having flyers printed and getting after it on the ground so I'll be providing them with some funds to offset their costs.
We also had a lot of people buy the official #SaveBucky shirts From Teespring.com/savebucky They are in production and being shipped. If you would still like one.. click on the link and the campaign will re-start. If you want to donate (All donations are appreciated) you can do so here: https://www.crowdrise.com/savebucky
If you are a current student and want to get involved, e-mail me at IamaBronc@gmail.com. We are getting a team together to flyer and get the word out around campus.
You alumni, former staff, current students, and members of the community; the Bronc belongs to all of you. We should be preserving the emblem that this region has identified with for decades.
Bronc athletics at one point used this tagline.. "UTPA Broncs... The Valley's Team" We have ALWAYS been the Valley's team. Now that we are UT-RGV it would only make sense that we continue to be THE VALLEY'S TEAM!!
Someone who isn't an alum but supports the petition wrote this in the comments,
"The Bronc isn't just something that belongs to the Alumni of UTPA. The Bronc belongs to this region. I did not attend UTPA, however a large percentage of my family and friends have. I grew up with the Bronc. Attending UTPA Basketball games when a young Bob Hoffman was putting the pieces together of this University which has helped lead it into a great Division 1 conference. You know, funny, the term Bronco comes from the Spanish language word bronco, meaning rough. That's kinda how it is down here in the RGV. Sometimes it's a little rough and tough. But we make do. We survive. We ride this buckin' bronco called life, and live it to the fullest. Taking away the Bronco isn't just taking it from the alumni, faculty and current students... You're taking it away from future students and this community."
The Bronc belongs to all of us, why people want to change it, just for the sake of changing it, boggles my mind.
Please pass the petition along.. tell people they can just go to Savebucky.net and come straight to this petition. We need as many signatures as possible!
I appreciate all of you and thank you for support. We are proud to be supporters of the Broncs, lets hope our efforts continue to grow and inspire preservation and not elimination.
Best-
Alex Del Barrio
