Bridge River Lillooet News reports:
Mayor Marg Lampman says plans to restore passenger rail service are still on track.
She reported to council April 3 that the group working to restore the service is using an industry working committee model that was successfully used to restore ferry service in Bella Coola.
“Support for the initiative continues to build, and the industry leaders who will be working with us are very impressive,” said Mayor Lampman. “I can’t say enough about the co-operation and the help we’re getting from the MLA’s office and other mayors along the way from North Vancouver up to Prince George.”
She said the group intends to work “over the next year” on a proposal to present to VIA Rail.
“If all goes well, we understand VIA Rail is still very interested in it. We have to come up with something that will spark their interest and have them look at it as a really good business proposition.”
The Budd car passenger service between North Vancouver and Prince George was eliminated by CN on Oct. 31, 2002 after CN secured the lease on B.C. Rail’s tracks throughout the province.
CN has shown no interest in restoring the passenger rail service.
