ENGLISH

On the beautiful island of Lesvos, over 10,000 innocent sheep, goats and cows have already been taken from their farmers and slaughtered. And this continues every single day, all over the island.

The sheep of Lesvos are a unique autochthonous breed — one of the most distinctive in Greece and Europe. Adapted over centuries to the island’s harsh conditions, they are famous for their high-quality milk used in traditional feta and other cheeses. They represent a precious genetic and cultural heritage that must be protected.

Almost all of these animals are healthy. If authorities find even one animal with antibodies or the disease in a herd, they kill the entire flock without further testing. Farmers are not given the chance to prove their animals are free of the virus.

Furthermore, all FMD testing in Greece must be processed exclusively through the single National Reference Laboratory in Athens. Local veterinarians on Lesvos cannot send samples elsewhere for independent verification, causing significant delays and limiting rapid response capabilities. Mass culling is extremely difficult to manage — involving complex quarantines, enormous logistics, high disposal costs — and has huge economic and environmental consequences.

These gentle animals are being slaughtered on-site without proper stunning, causing terrible and unnecessary suffering. Their bodies are then dumped in shallow pits on the farms. Because of the rocky soil and the warming spring weather, blood and fluids are rising to the surface, turning peaceful fields into a sanitary nightmare and an environmental tragedy.

These practices violate key EU laws, even in disease control emergencies:

Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 requires animals to be stunned before killing to avoid any avoidable pain, distress or suffering.
Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687 and Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009 demand safe, prompt and biosecure carcass disposal to prevent environmental contamination and further disease spread.

The authorities are carrying out these actions in secrecy — they do not announce when or where the culls will happen. Farmers are being pressured and threatened: if they speak out, they are told they will not receive compensation. While some small payments have started arriving, they are far below the real value of the animals (for example, a cow worth €2,000 receives only around €1,000). Many farmers have still received nothing.

This is not only heartbreaking — it is illegal under EU law. We beg you to stand with us. Help us protect these unique Lesvos sheep, the farming families who love them, and the soul of our island.

Our urgent demands:

1. Immediately stop the ongoing daily mass culling of healthy animals.
2. Enforce proper, humane stunning and legal disposal methods.
3. Implement selective culling only of clinically affected animals.
4. Conduct a full epidemiological investigation.
5. Provide comprehensive support for affected farmers.
6. Require a comprehensive, independent scientific assessment of the economic, environmental, animal welfare, and epidemiological consequences of all possible strategies before proceeding further.
7. Deliver fair and transparent compensation that reflects the real value of the animals lost.
8. Publish a full public payment tracker showing all amounts paid to farmers.

Βοηθήστε μας να σταματήσουμε την Αποτρόπαια Σφαγή Υγιών Προβάτων στη Λέσβο – 

Στο όμορφο νησί της Λέσβου, πάνω από 10.000 αθώα πρόβατα, κατσίκια και αγελάδες έχουν ήδη αφαιρεθεί από τους κτηνοτρόφους και σφαγεί. Και αυτό συνεχίζεται κάθε μέρα, σε όλο το νησί.

Το πρόβατο της Λέσβου είναι μια μοναδική αυτόχθονη φυλή — μία από τις πιο ξεχωριστές στην Ελλάδα και την Ευρώπη. Προσαρμοσμένο εδώ και αιώνες στις σκληρές συνθήκες του νησιού, είναι διάσημο για το υψηλής ποιότητας γάλα του που χρησιμοποιείται στην παραδοσιακή φέτα και άλλα τυριά. Αποτελεί πολύτιμο γενετικό και πολιτιστικό κεφάλαιο που πρέπει να προστατευθεί.

Σχεδόν όλα αυτά τα ζώα είναι υγιή. Αν οι αρχές βρουν έστω και ένα ζώο με αντισώματα ή την ασθένεια σε ένα κοπάδι, σκοτώνουν ολόκληρο το κοπάδι χωρίς περαιτέρω εξετάσεις. Οι κτηνοτρόφοι δεν έχουν καμία ευκαιρία να αποδείξουν ότι τα ζώα τους είναι καθαρά.

Επιπλέον, όλες οι εξετάσεις για τον Αφθώδη Πυρετό στην Ελλάδα πρέπει να διεκπεραιώνονται αποκλειστικά μέσω του μοναδικού Εθνικού Εργαστηρίου Αναφοράς στην Αθήνα. Οι τοπικοί κτηνίατροι στη Λέσβο δεν επιτρέπεται να στείλουν δείγματα αλλού για ανεξάρτητη επαλήθευση, προκαλώντας σημαντικές καθυστερήσεις και περιορίζοντας τις δυνατότητες γρήγορης αντίδρασης.

Η μαζική σφαγή είναι εξαιρετικά δύσκολο να διαχειριστεί — περιλαμβάνει πολύπλοκες καραντίνες, τεράστια logistics και υψηλό κόστος διάθεσης — και έχει τεράστιες οικονομικές και περιβαλλοντικές συνέπειες.

Αυτά τα ήρεμα ζώα σφάζονται επιτόπου χωρίς σωστή αναισθησία, προκαλώντας φρικτό και περιττό πόνο. Τα πτώματά τους πετιούνται σε ρηχούς λάκκους μέσα στα χωράφια. Λόγω του βραχώδους εδάφους και της ανερχόμενης θερμοκρασίας, το αίμα και τα υγρά αναβλύζουν στην επιφάνεια, μετατρέποντας τα ειρηνικά χωράφια σε υγειονομικό εφιάλτη και περιβαλλοντική τραγωδία.

Αυτές οι πρακτικές παραβιάζουν βασικούς ευρωπαϊκούς νόμους, ακόμα και σε καταστάσεις έκτακτης ανάγκης:

Ο Κανονισμός (ΕΚ) 1099/2009 απαιτεί τα ζώα να αναισθητοποιούνται πριν από τη σφαγή για να αποφευχθεί οποιοσδήποτε αποφεύξιμος πόνος, ταλαιπωρία ή ταλαιπωρία.

Ο Κανονισμός (ΕΕ) 2020/687 και ο Κανονισμός (ΕΚ) 1069/2009 απαιτούν ασφαλή, άμεση και βιοασφαλή διάθεση των πτωμάτων για την αποφυγή περιβαλλοντικής ρύπανσης και περαιτέρω εξάπλωσης της ασθένειας.

Οι αρχές κάνουν αυτές τις ενέργειες κρυφά — δεν ανακοινώνουν πότε και πού θα γίνουν οι σφαγές. Οι κτηνοτρόφοι απειλούνται: αν μιλήσουν, τους λένε ότι δεν θα πάρουν αποζημίωση. Ενώ έχουν αρχίσει να φτάνουν κάποιες μικρές πληρωμές, αυτές είναι πολύ χαμηλότερες από την πραγματική αξία των ζώων (π.χ. μια αγελάδα αξίας 2.000 ευρώ λαμβάνει μόνο περίπου 1.000 ευρώ). Πολλοί κτηνοτρόφοι δεν έχουν λάβει ακόμα τίποτα.

Αυτό δεν είναι μόνο σπαραξικάρδιο — είναι παράνομο σύμφωνα με το ευρωπαϊκό δίκαιο. Σας ικετεύουμε να σταθείτε δίπλα μας. Βοηθήστε μας να προστατεύσουμε αυτά τα μοναδικά πρόβατα της Λέσβου, τις οικογένειες των κτηνοτρόφων που τα αγαπούν, και την ψυχή του νησιού μας.

Τα επείγοντα αιτήματά μας:

1. Να σταματήσει άμεσα η καθημερινή μαζική σφαγή υγιών ζώων.
2. Να τηρηθούν οι σωστές, ανθρώπινες μέθοδοι αναισθησίας και νόμιμης διάθεσης.
3. Να εφαρμοστεί επιλεκτική σφαγή μόνο κλινικά προσβεβλημένων ζώων.
4. Να διεξαχθεί πλήρης επιδημιολογική έρευνα.
5. Να παρασχεθεί πλήρης στήριξη στους πληγέντες κτηνοτρόφους.
6. Να γίνει πλήρης, ανεξάρτητη επιστημονική αξιολόγηση των οικονομικών, περιβαλλοντικών, ζωοφιλικών και επιδημιολογικών συνεπειών όλων των πιθανών στρατηγικών πριν προχωρήσουμε περαιτέρω.
7. Να δοθούν δίκαιες και διαφανείς αποζημιώσεις που ανταποκρίνονται στην πραγματική αξία των χαμένων ζώων.
8. Να δημοσιευτεί πλήρες δημόσιο μητρώο πληρωμών με όλα τα ποσά που έχουν δοθεί στους κτηνοτρόφους.

TAidez-nous à arrêter le massacre déchirant des moutons en bonne santé à Lesbos – Ils méritent mieux

Sur la belle île de Lesbos, plus de 10 000 innocents moutons, chèvres et vaches ont déjà été arrachés à leurs éleveurs et abattus. Et cela continue chaque jour, partout sur l’île.

Le mouton de Lesbos est une race autochtone unique — l’une des plus distinctives en Grèce et en Europe. Adapté depuis des siècles aux conditions difficiles de l’île, il est célèbre pour son lait de haute qualité utilisé dans la feta traditionnelle et d’autres fromages. Il représente un précieux patrimoine génétique et culturel qui doit être protégé.

Presque tous ces animaux sont en bonne santé. Si les autorités trouvent un seul animal avec des anticorps ou la maladie dans un troupeau, elles tuent tout le troupeau sans tests supplémentaires. Les éleveurs n’ont aucune chance de prouver que leurs animaux sont sains. En outre, tous les tests de fièvre aphteuse en Grèce doivent être traités exclusivement par le seul Laboratoire National de Référence à Athènes.

 Les vétérinaires locaux de Lesbos ne sont pas autorisés à envoyer des échantillons ailleurs pour vérification indépendante, ce qui entraîne des retards importants et limite les capacités de réponse rapide. La mise à mort massive est extrêmement difficile à gérer — impliquant des quarantaines complexes, une logistique énorme et des coûts de disposition élevés — et a d’énormes conséquences économiques et environnementales.

Ces animaux doux sont abattus sur place sans étourdissement correct, provoquant une souffrance terrible et inutile. Leurs corps sont jetés dans des fosses peu profondes dans les fermes. À cause du sol rocheux et de la chaleur croissante, le sang et les fluides remontent à la surface, transformant les champs paisibles en cauchemar sanitaire et en tragédie environnementale.

Ces pratiques violent des lois européennes clés, même en situation d’urgence :

Le Règlement (CE) n° 1099/2009 exige que les animaux soient étourdis avant d’être tués.
Le Règlement délégué (UE) 2020/687 et le Règlement (CE) n° 1069/2009 exigent une élimination sûre, rapide et biosécurisée des carcasses.

Les autorités agissent en secret — elles n’annoncent ni le moment ni le lieu des abattages. Les éleveurs sont menacés : s’ils parlent, on leur dit qu’ils ne recevront pas de compensation. Bien que quelques petits paiements aient commencé à arriver, ils sont largement inférieurs à la valeur réelle des animaux (par exemple, une vache valant 2 000 € ne reçoit qu’environ 1 000 €). De nombreux éleveurs n’ont encore rien reçu.

Ce n’est pas seulement déchirant — c’est illégal selon le droit européen. Nous vous supplions de vous tenir à nos côtés. Aidez-nous à protéger ces moutons uniques de Lesbos, les familles d’éleveurs qui les aiment, et l’âme de notre île.

Nos demandes urgentes :

1. Arrêter immédiatement l’abattage massif quotidien d’animaux sains.
2. Appliquer des méthodes d’étourdissement et d’élimination humaines et légales.
3. Mettre en œuvre l’abattage sélectif uniquement des animaux cliniquement atteints.
4. Réaliser une enquête épidémiologique complète.
5. Fournir un soutien complet aux éleveurs touchés.
6. Exiger une évaluation scientifique complète et indépendante des conséquences économiques, environnementales, de bien-être animal et épidémiologiques de toutes les stratégies possibles avant de poursuivre.
7. Fournir une compensation juste et transparente qui reflète la valeur réelle des animaux perdus.
8. Publier un suivi public complet de tous les paiements versés aux éleveurs.

Auf der wunderschönen Insel Lesbos wurden bereits über 10.000 unschuldige Schafe, Ziegen und Kühe ihren Bauern genommen und geschlachtet. Und das geht jeden Tag, überall auf der Insel weiter.

Das Lesbos-Schaf ist eine einzigartige autochthone Rasse — eine der charakteristischsten in Griechenland und Europa. Seit Jahrhunderten an die harten Bedingungen der Insel angepasst, ist es bekannt für seine hochwertige Milch, die für traditionellen Feta und andere Käsesorten verwendet wird. Es stellt ein wertvolles genetisches und kulturelles Erbe dar, das geschützt werden muss.

Fast alle diese Tiere sind gesund. Finden die Behörden in einer Herde auch nur ein einziges Tier mit Antikörpern oder der Krankheit, töten sie die gesamte Herde ohne weitere Tests.

Die Bauern haben keine Möglichkeit, zu beweisen, dass ihre Tiere virusfrei sind.

Außerdem müssen alle Tests auf Maul- und Klauenseuche in Griechenland ausschließlich über das einzige Nationale Referenzlabor in Athen abgewickelt werden.

Lokale Tierärzte auf Lesbos dürfen Proben nicht anderswo zur unabhängigen Überprüfung einsenden, was zu erheblichen Verzögerungen führt und die Möglichkeiten einer schnellen Reaktion stark einschränkt. Die Massentötung ist extrem schwer zu bewältigen — mit komplexen Quarantänen, enormer Logistik und hohen Entsorgungskosten — und hat massive wirtschaftliche und ökologische Folgen.

Diese sanften Tiere werden vor Ort ohne ordnungsgemäße Betäubung geschlachtet, was ihnen schreckliche und unnötige Qualen bereitet. Ihre Körper werden in flache Gruben auf den Höfen geworfen. Durch den felsigen Boden und die steigenden Temperaturen tritt Blut und Körperflüssigkeit an die Oberfläche, wodurch friedliche Felder zu einem hygienischen Albtraum und einer Umweltkatastrophe werden.

8. Veröffentlichung eines vollständigen öffentlichen Zahlungstrackers mit allen an Bauern gezahlten Beträgen.
