Hi everyone,
WE HAVE AMAZING NEWS!!
You may have already heard - The regulators have deemed second-generation rat baits to be a restricted chemical product! This isn't a complete ban, but it IS a major milestone, as retail sale of these devastating poisons has been suspended for a year from March 24. Existing stock is allowed to be sold, but no more is allowed to be purchased. We should see SGAR poisons taken off shelves VERY SOON. This is a major win for our animals, as this was not the original decision proposed by the regulator in February.
What happens next? We hope this restriction will be enforced next year. This would mean only licensed professionals would able to use these baits, and public sale would be permanently banned.
This would not have happened without a collaborative and exhaustive effort from conservationists, wildlife carers, scientists and every single one of you who has helped spread awareness and pressured the government and the regulator to make this happen.
The restriction still needs to be approved, and state and territory governments will be working with the regulator over the next 10 months to determine licensing rules and implement the changes. We will be keeping a close eye on this and will update you as soon as we hear any more news.
This is a uplifting example of people power. Together, we CAN make a difference.
Thank you for caring about those who don't have a voice.
Until next time,
Meg,
