Santa Susana burned in the Woolsey fire – don’t let the DTSC lie to us about it
Nov 11, 2018 —
This nightmare keeps getting worse. Our family is holed up inside, our bags packed so we’re ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. I’m scared to breathe the air outside, but we’re scared at what will happen if we stay here.
But what worries me most is that so few of my neighbors really know what’s going on. I see people walking around outside without masks, completely oblivious to what they could be breathing in.
While families, firefighters and first responders inhale potentially radioactive and toxic chemicals in this awful smoke, the DTSC says it has no evidence that the smoke is unusually dangerous. This is an agency that has repeatedly lied to us, minimized risk from the Santa Susana Field Lab and broken every promise ever made regarding the clean up. Why would we trust them when the lab is on fire – especially now that we know the fire actually began at Santa Susana?
I see so many people asking questions on social media about whether their families are at risk from a fire that started at a former nuclear testing site, yet almost all the newspapers reporting on the issue are sharing DTSC’s statements and calling our concerns “rumors.” I want people to hear the other side of this debate.
I’ll be back with more actions, but this is an important first step. Thank you as always for your support.
P.S. If you’re local, come join us at Senator Stern’s office this evening to push him to call for independent monitoring of the smoke coming from the fire.
