Dear fellow HDFC shareholders, Winter is still with us but soon the weather will be warmer, and HPD has a new Commissioner. We all need to be informed and prepared. 2017 will be the year that defines the future for the estimated 50,000 people living in HDFC cooperatives. That's a lot of voters, and the politicians know it! If we keep organizing, we can determine our future, instead of having it determined for us. In this update: -(Last?) HPD presentation in Brooklyn Feb 16 (And can you help flyer Brooklyn HDFCs?) -Special Election in Harlem Feb 14 (See candidates statements on HDFCs!) -Manhattan Community Board 4: HDFC Public Forum on February 22 -Manhattan Community Board 12: Upcoming HDFC meeting, date TBA -------------- Brooklyn: HPD’s Presentation to HDFCs in Brooklyn on February 16 at 6:30pm at P.S. 414 This may be the last HPD public outreach to HDFC shareholders before they try to get their proposal passed by the City Council! Be sure to go if you can, and especially if you are in an HDFC in Brooklyn. Rather than working directly with real HDFC shareholders to improve HDFCs (instead of with “non-profit” groups that are looking to make money year after year from “helping” our HDFCs but really want to keep us forever dependent on them), HPD will, yet again, try and convince HDFC shareholders that they would be better off giving up their property rights, and if HDFCs don’t agree, that it would be a good idea for the City to charge HDFCs full property taxes (while market rate co-ops get their tax abatement without restrictions). Also, HPD wants to reduce the value of HDFC apartments, after we have struggled for decades to rebuilding abandoned buildings that the City was more than happy to get rid of. We need to get our fellow HDFC shareholders aware of what is happening so they can turn out in big numbers and tell HPD what they think.
