We have received Ankita Anand’s petition asking CNN News 18 to set an example for all news organizations by boycotting disrespectful stock images of victims and survivors of sexual violence, and showing them in a positive light.
We wish to assure Ankita, the 47,000 signers of her petition and our viewers that as India’s leading English news network CNN News 18 believes in reporting objectively and sensitively on all issues including gender-based violence, as these shape public perceptions on matters related to gender justice.
Towards this end, we are happy to share that CNN News 18 has removed all stock images from its database that portray victims and survivors of sexual violence as helpless, timid, scared, muffled, crouching and overshadowed. These have been replaced with standard, neutral images.
We have also let all our reporters, members of our editorial and production teams know how to use images while reporting on sexual violence.
We would like you to stay updated on the latest news developments. Please follow us on Twitter @CNNnews18
Thank you,
