In less than 24 hours this petition has obtained almost 200 signatures. Thank you to all those that have signed the petition so far and we encourage you to let your family and friends know about what the Department of Conservation is planning to do with an important part of New Zealand's heritage - Demolish it!! How ironic when the Department website states:- "We are the government agency charged with conserving New Zealand’s natural and historic heritage." We encourage you to write letters to the editor of your local paper as the only way we can stop this from occurring is via people power. We have no legal options open to us, as only a Local Authority can seek an enforcement order from the Environment Court to stop the Department. The Wairoa District Council appear unlikely to do this. We need to pressure the Government and DOC to understand that our heritage is important and must be treated with respect so that it is available to future generations.
