Freagra iomlán na Roinne
The Department is aware of the Private Members’ Bill introduced by Senator Warfield in May which seeks to establish a quota of 5% for Irish language Music on Commercial Radio Stations. This Bill must be considered in the context of the wider debate on how Irish Broadcasters should support Irish musicians and music, and what the Government or the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s role should be in this regard. This was the substance of the second stage debate on Deputy Willie Penrose’ Private Members’ Bill in December 2016.
The Department’s view is that the imposition of a specific quota for Irish language music would be too restrictive on broadcasters. On the wider subject raised in Deputy Penrose’ Bill, the Minister’s preference is that all stakeholders would agree on a definition of Irish Music without the need for legislative change.
