Tell Iceland Killing Whales Is Not Better Than Tourism
Das Problem
Icelandic officials recently published a report which found killing whales and selling the meat at vast profit to the Japanese brought in significantly more money than was lost from tourists who cancelled holidays in protest.
The report noted a single whale carcass brought in 16.4 million ISK (105,000 GBP), far outweighing the loss from the handful of tourists that decided not to visit the country over whaling.
Critics pointed out that the Icelandic Ministry of Industries and Innovation and the University of Iceland which carried it out considered only the financial impact.
They noted drug dealing and child pornography are also profitable, but it does not mean we should accept them.
The Icelandic whaling report is wrong.
I was planning to visit Iceland, but now I will not be doing so as long as whaling continues.
Let me know if you feel the same, and if we can get a million cancelled holidays I will take great pleasure in going back to the University of Iceland and the ministry of industries to ask if they still feel whaling does not impact on tourism.
