Thanks a lot guys for your support. This really is the only option that will give us real choice, provide a way to hold providers accountable if necessary, and help us start to address our digital divide issues. I just wanted to say 3 things at this milestone.
1. Remember that whatever is being advertised by CenturyLink or Comcast, the latency on their connections tends to be very high, especially when compared with real symmetrical fiber connections. It will always be in their interest to do the least amount of work and charge the highest price, which will always be bad for us. The supposed gigabit service they will be offering starts at about $80 a month, with a long 2 year contract, and then jumps up to $130 a month. This is way too high for many families. Please keep in mind that we already have great local providers that don't have contracts.
2. Hundreds of communities have already done this successfully. Here is a the Community Broadband Networks Map for you to admire :).

3. This is an excellent investment for our community. I encourage you all to add to the discussion that COB Council Member Michael Lilliquist has responded to here. Your comments have been excellent!
-- Today I performed a public records request for the documents relating to very recently disclosed CenturyLink deal. I am still annoyed that this information wasn't presented to me months ago when I started looking into this and first contacted the city. Obtaining copies of them costs some money. There is an option to review them in person for free, but that is not practical for the amount of time I'll be spending reviewing them. The CL deal still has to be voted on.
