Yesterday, Alderman Joe Moore posted his plan to address safety concerns on the lakefront including repainting no diving signs and talking with officials about leaving warning flags up on days with dangerous currents, fixing a local school pool, and creating a task force to identify problems for next beach season. I am concerned that none of these steps are addressing the concerns raised in this petition and worried about the efficacy of a task force without community representation. We are grateful local legislator is giving this issue attention, but will continue to push for meaningful change. The Tribune published an article outlining the aldermans plan and my response to it, and Joe Moore finally agreed to meet with me in person next Thursday morning. In anticipation of the meeting, I filed some FOIA requests to get some real numbers on the fiscal cost of rescues to the city each year as well as budget for beachfront safety measures, Chicago park district, and fire prevention to put the 700,000 the alderman is concerned about for drowning prevention in perspective. We will keep you posted. Kathy was also interviewed on camera with ABC news regarding our work and the Alderman’s response. See that footage here: http://abc7chicago.com/group-seeks-improved-beach-safety-after-13-year-old-girl-drowns-at-north-side-beach/3773594/ This Saturday Maria Hadden is hosting a water safety event put on by Great Lakes sirf Rescue Project specifically geared towards Lake Michigan at Loyola field house 1230 Greenleaf 60626 at 10:00am, free for all. Hope to see you there!
