Hello again! Thanks to your advocacy, the San Mateo Ice Rink has been back up and running for a few years now. I hope that you are enjoying it as much as our family.
Unfortunately, as you are likely aware, we continue to be on thin ice when it comes to skating and ice hockey opportunities on the Peninsula. Ice Oasis in Redwood City has closed and apartments are now being built where kids used to skate at Belmont Iceland. The skyrocketing cost of land has made it increasingly difficult for rinks to compete in the area.
The good news is that we now have our best opportunity in years for a new rink on the Peninsula. Thanks to the hard work of the Mid-Peninsula Ice Rink Foundation (MIRF - the guys that led the charge for a rink in Burlingame) and the generosity of the Jay Paul Company, Redwood City is considering approval of a state-of-the-art 1.5 sheet facility on the former site of Malibu Grand Prix.
We need your help in convincing the City of Redwood City to approve the proposal. Please go to www.midpeninsulaice.org and add your name to the list of supporters. There you can find drawings of the rink and sign up to receive updates. No, they aren't asking for donations. They are simply trying to demonstrate to the City that there is broad support for a new rink.
Thank you for taking this important next step in making sure that our kids continue to have a place to skate on the Peninsula.
Sincerely,
Mike Swire & the Committee to Save the San Mateo Ice Rink
