Today, Commissioner Robert Manfred Jr. issued an announcement threatening the Major League Baseball Players' Association with the prospect of cancelling the 2020 season altogether should they seek to take legal action against the Commissioner and his league for not negotiating terms of the Covid-19-altered 2020 MLB season in previously-promised "good faith".
In the eyes of this petition's author, this is not only an admission of guilt—a Commissioner with a clear conscience regarding the negotiations would not need to threaten the Union to silence their accusations—but also proof of a severe lack of morality. Players should not have to decide between earning their salary (or rather, a small portion of their salary as Manfred and the league owners are unwilling to pay players in full even if a 2020 season is played) or fighting for the terms the Commissioner legally agreed to this March.
This development comes after months of conflict between the Commissioner and the Players' Association, in which the former has repeatedly refused to agree to pay the players their salaries. The Commissioner has argued that, due to Covid-19 prohibiting fans from attending games, revenue will be lower than in past seasons and the players should take a pay cut. This, despite that when revenue has been high in previous seasons, the Commissioner's office has never been willing to share the profits with players.
The clear lack of morality and apparent lack of interest in actually playing baseball is just the latest display that Rob Manfred is unfit for Commissioner of Baseball.
