On Tuesday, January 10, Council District 8 put forth a motion (Council File 23-0026) to veto the permit denials for the development of a luxury hotel on the Bethune site and remand the matter for reconsideration to the South LA Area Planning Commission.
This luxury hotel would be built on publicly owned land long-slated for affordable housing.
The City Zoning Administrator has said no. The South LA Planning Commission has said no. Most importantly, for ten years, the people have been saying no. But some of the folks elected to represent the people’s interests don’t seem to be hearing it.
So we need to say it yet AGAIN.
Read our open letter to LA City Council.
Then tell your council member by Tuesday, January 17, to vote no on this motion and keep this public land for public good.

In the midst of a citywide housing crisis, we should not be using valuable public land for corporate development projects like luxury hotels, which gentrify and displace communities to accommodate tourists.
