They voted to review making these binding by 2020, a huge step in the right direction. Now the Council, Commission and Parliament will enter three-way negotiations to thrash out a final compromise agreement. The Council’s position on food waste has emerged, and it’s incredibly weak. Momentum’s on our side, so we need to ensure that the Parliament’s position wins out, and the Council don’t succeed in watering down the ambition! Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of the European Commission, recently said that he welcomed the Parliament’s recommendations on food waste, and that “I will do everything in my power to make sure that we stay as close as possible to Parliament’s position”. We need to make sure he follows through on that promise, as the Parliament will need all the help they can get to ensure the Council don’t fight down their ambitious proposals!
