Legalize Perpendicular Parking at the Brigham Street Dead End
Проблема
We ask the New York City Department of Transportation to inspect and formally authorize perpendicular parking on the dead-end portion of Brigham Street, approximately 100 feet south of Emmons Avenue, directly beside Lew Fidler Park and its children’s playground.
For years, residents and park visitors have used this area for perpendicular parking. Its wide layout, two established rows of vehicles, central maneuvering aisle, and existing concrete wheel stops clearly show how this space has long functioned. The area has no through traffic and provides direct access to the park and playground.
On September 4, 2026, every vehicle parked in this area received a $45 “Angle Parking” ticket, including vehicles positioned directly in front of the existing wheel stops. The summons itself identified the problem: “No sign posted that authorizes angle parking.”
Residents should not continue to be penalized because the City failed to formally complete and mark a long-used parking area. After collecting $45 from every vehicle present, the City should now finish the modest work that remains: authorize the parking arrangement, paint individual parking-space lines, repair or reposition the wheel stops, and install clear signs.
Requiring parallel parking here would eliminate most of the available spaces without making the playground safer. It would instead force families to search for parking farther away and unload children on surrounding streets with active traffic. Clearly marked perpendicular spaces would make parking more orderly, predictable, and practical.
We request that NYC DOT:
• Conduct an on-site engineering and parking study.
• Formally designate perpendicular parking spaces on both sides of the dead-end area.
• Paint individual parking-space lines.
• Repair, reposition, or replace the existing concrete wheel stops.
• Consider “BACK-IN / HEAD-OUT PARKING ONLY” signage so drivers can leave with a clear view of pedestrians and children.
• Preserve a clearly marked pedestrian path to the entrances of Lew Fidler Park.
• Suspend further angle-parking enforcement while the location is being reviewed.
• Review the September 4, 2026 enforcement action and determine whether the tickets should be dismissed or refunded.
The City has already identified the missing sign. Now it must install the sign, paint the spaces, and finish the job.
Please sign this petition and help us turn this long-used parking area into safe, orderly, and officially authorized parking for residents and families visiting Lew Fidler Park.
