As I am writing this update, vehicles and semi's continue to barrell down Lakeshore Dr.
On 9/6/23 at 2:00pm we had a meeting with Derek Degroot (county commissioner chair). He promised to, “take care of the trucks” on Lakeshore Dr and that it was, “as simple as walking down the hall.” He also said he’d have more “truck signs installed.” The meeting was recorded by the county. He offered 2 things:
1) More truck signs and to re-route semi trucks
2) To become part of the City via annexation. This option would give us a “higher quality of security” but would double our property taxes.
So far, NOTHING has been done. We’ve seen 3 semi’s this morning barreling south on Lakeshore Dr. There's no new signs. A female resident was recently hit by a vehicle on Lakeshore Dr. Another family just lost their beloved family dog. Both hit by reckless drivers who most likely won’t be held accountable. This is blatant disregard for human safety.
We have the City Police (right here) that could assist. There are plenty of temporary signs available, and not used. Klamath Falls has many resources, not being utilized. There is no coordination or enforcement because it's not part of the county commissioner's political agenda. In the recorded meeting 9/20/23 They discussed "safety" issues for the Eclipse Festival. Tribal members and property owners just found out about the festival. It's clear that if your safety needs don't align with the commissioner's political agena, you're simply out of luck. We need action or new leadership!
Commissioner's keep referring to the sheriff's office, however refuse to give him more funding for deputies. His hands are tied and they’re trying their best to enforce traffic, with extremely limited resources and man power. They need more funding from the commissioners and/or coordination with City Police.
