Thornhill Mining Memorial Group

 

The Thornhill Mining Memorial group is made up of members of the public who are one hundred percent behind the location in Thornhill of a memorial to the miners who lost their lives in the 1893 and 1947 mining disasters, along with anyone who lost their lives by working at Thornhill Colliery.  It is run by a Committee of volunteers.  The group started of as strangers but the conviction of the need to locate the mining memorial in Thornhill has now made them friends.

Our main aim is to provide a lasting memorial which will be available to all and in the long term will be a lasting reminder that Thornhill was once a thriving mining village forms part of our Heritage.

The group will be working extremely closely with the local authority, other external bodies and individualswho have any interest in this memorial being in Thornhill.  We are aware that other people have worked extremely hard, investing hours of time and effort for which everyone is grateful.  Our aim is the same it is the location where we all need to come together.

The support shown at the Public meeting held on Friday 21st February, 2020 and the comments put on the petition can clearly show the strength in feeling to having the mining memorial in Thornhill.
