Petition updateKeep ICE Detention Centers Away From Our Schools: Mandate a 3-Mile Safety Buffer ZoneHUGE UPDATE: Work at the ICE detention center has been PAUSED again!
Cali OversSurprise, AZ, United States
Jun 30, 2026

DHS agreed to temporarily stop working on converting the warehouse into an ICE detention center and will not put any detainees inside until they complete an environmental review. Now they have to actually research the effects of it sitting right across the street from a chemical storage company and near schools and neighborhoods. It most likely will not be opening in September. They are still allowed to do some basic work on the building so if you drive by and still see people working on it, that's why.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS: This pause only happened because the community and Attorney General Kris Mayes fought back against DHS.

Do not ever forget that Rep. Paul Gosar, Mayor Kevin Sartor, Dysart School District, Dysart Governing Board, and the Surprise City Council did absolutely nothing. They refused to publicly stand up for students. They stayed silent when we needed them the most and they need to be held accountable for their failure of leadership.

Even if this warehouse gets permanently shut down, we still need to make sure this can't happen to any other schools anywhere across the country. Please sign and share my 3-mile buffer zone petition to keep ICE detention centers away from K-12 schools at www.3milebuffer.com
