A big THANK YOU to Springfield Hotel in County Kildare for becoming the latest hotel to remove greyhound racing from its website.

Following an appeal, Shelbourne Park stadium was removed from the hotel’s Things to Do pages.

Highlighted to the hotel was the cruelty and killing in greyhound racing, the injuries and deaths at tracks and the fact that national tourism bodies Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland have both stopped promoting greyhound racing due to fears that it damages Ireland's reputation as a tourist destination.

Shelbourne Park is one of the worst tracks in Ireland for dog injuries and deaths. At least 217 greyhounds have suffered injuries there and 54 died or were killed by a track vet over the past seven years alone, sickening Greyhound Racing Ireland statistics show.

Among the victims were a greyhound who collapsed and died in December 2020 after suffering a "haemorrhage into the abdomen from a rupture of the aorta", a greyhound who died of a heart attack after a race in August 2019 and another who was carried away bleeding with a leg bone "popped out". This month, Greyhound Racing Ireland confirmed that a greyhound died after suffering fatal injuries at Shelbourne stadium. The dog, named Deadly Samuri, is believed to have sustained a broken leg and neck.

At tracks around Ireland in the same seven year period, at least 2,315 greyhounds suffered injuries and 788 died or were killed. The Irish Greyhound Board figures are based on "reported" injuries and deaths, suggesting that the actual number could be even higher. They do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere, or the thousands of greyhounds who are killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races.

Springfield Hotel is the latest in a growing list of those who have rejected/removed greyhound racing content, including Maldron Hotels, Clayton Hotels, North Star Hotel Dublin, Metropole Hotel Cork, Treacy’s Hotel Waterford, Air France (which removed Irish greyhound racing from 44 of its international websites), Toyota Ireland, Opel Ireland, Heineken Ireland/Murphy’s, Dublin Bus, Eir Sport, Tesco Ireland, Electric Ireland, Applegreen, Barry’s Tea, Hyde Irish Whiskey, Galway Crystal, FBD Insurance, Botanica International, Voucher Cloud, Permanent TSB, Trip Indicator, In Your Pocket City Guides, Food For Thought (the official publication of the Restaurants Association of Ireland), Hertz, Galway Tourism, Tramore.ie, Dublin Convention Bureau, MummyPages, etc.
