A protest will be held outside the so-called National Hare Coursing Festival at Powerstown Park, Clonmel, County Tipperary on Sunday, February 6th. The protest will run from noon to 3 pm. Placards and posters will be provided by the alliance of animal protection groups organizing the demo. Or you can bring your own if you wish.
The demo will coincide with Day Three of the four day “festival” of animal cruelty, the All-Ireland Finals” of the hare coursing season in Ireland. A second day was added this year to prolong the fun and gambling experience for fans.
Unfortunately the hares will not be enjoying the occasion. Snatched from the wild and held in captivity for weeks prior to the event, they will be serving as live bait in a game that is outlawed almost worldwide, apart from in Ireland, Iberia, and Pakistan.
Right now, hundreds of hares are confined in part of Powerstiown Park racecourse, fenced in and guarded by “heavies” who fear that opponents of the blood sport will attempt to release them, as occurred at other coursing venues in the past.
Already this season, hares have been hounded at over seventy venues around Ireland, with small crowds of fans, including grubby backwoods politicians who see advantage in backing “recreational” animal cruelty. The animals have been mauled, forcibly struck, or tossed about like playthings for the amusement of the gamblers who think nothing of the suffering inflicted.
For them the whole occasion is just a day out and a flutter on the dogs. The hare is just bait for the dogs, an animal that, thanks to our skewered legal system, finds itself at the butt end of this “sport.”
Later this year, Deputy Paul Murphy will attempt to have hare coursing outlawed in Ireland via a parliamentary Private Members Bill. So, it’s vital for the success of the Bill that opponents of hare coursing turn out on Sunday. A good showing will demonstrate that we are no longer prepared to accept this vile form of animal cruelty.
