At the hearing of the Judicial Panel of enquiry yesterday in Lagos Nigeria, Brigadier General Ahmed Taiwo who heads the Army’s 81st Division in Lagos, stated while giving evidence before the Panel that the soldiers who were sent to Lekki Toll Gate on 20 October 2020, were issued with both blank and live bullets. This is the first time that the Nigerian Army has admitted that the soldiers were issued with live ammunition rounds, and it calls into question the veracity of their claims and account of the events of that day.

PS. In the context of their constantly changing account of their role at Lekki Toll Gate, I am of the opinion that there is sufficient material for the ICC which has formally accepted and acknowledged the Petition to commence a preliminary investigation of the incident with the minimum delay. As they say, justice delayed is justice denied and l intend to bring this maxim as well as this update to the attention of the ICC as soon as possible. Please be patient.
