Stop Thoughtless Hunting Cruelty in Cyprus

 

 

 

Across Cyprus, songbirds and small animals are shot, wounded, and left to suffer. This is not hunting for food. It is not responsible wildlife management. And it is not conservation. Too often, it is simply the careless killing of animals for recreation.

 

At the same time, spent shotgun cartridges are left behind in fields and natural areas, polluting the landscape and showing contempt for nature. Some even claim these cartridges “rot away,” as if that excuses throwing them into the environment.

 

The same lack of responsibility can also be seen in the treatment of some hunting dogs. In certain cases, they are kept in poor and degrading conditions, especially during the summer: with inadequate shelter, stale water, bare ground, and insufficient daily care.

 

This is why Cyprus needs a tax of around €3 per hunting cartridge. This would not ban hunting, but it would make reckless shooting more expensive and help fund wildlife rescue, environmental clean-up, inspections, and stronger animal welfare enforcement.

 

Animals must not be shot for amusement. Nature must not be treated as a dumping ground. Dogs must not be neglected.

Stoppt gedankenlose Jagdgrausamkeit in Zypern

 

In ganz Zypern werden Singvögel und andere Kleintiere angeschossen, verletzt und oft qualvoll ihrem Schicksal überlassen. Das hat nichts mit Nahrungserwerb zu tun, nichts mit verantwortungsvoller Wildhege und nichts mit Naturschutz. Viel zu oft wirkt es wie gedankenloses Töten aus Freizeitvergnügen.

 

Gleichzeitig bleiben leere Jagdpatronenhülsen auf Feldern und in der Natur liegen. Sie verschmutzen die Landschaft und zeigen eine erschreckende Missachtung gegenüber Umwelt und Tierwelt. Manche behaupten sogar, diese Hülsen würden ohnehin „verrotten“, als wäre das eine Entschuldigung für solches Verhalten.

 

Dieselbe Verantwortungslosigkeit zeigt sich zum Teil auch im Umgang mit Jagdhunden. Manche dieser Hunde werden gerade im Sommer unter unwürdigen Bedingungen gehalten: mit unzureichendem Schutz, abgestandenem Wasser, blankem Boden und mangelhafter täglicher Versorgung.

 

Deshalb braucht Zypern eine Abgabe von etwa 3 € pro Jagdpatrone. Damit würde die Jagd nicht verboten, aber gedankenloses Schießen würde verteuert, und zugleich könnten Mittel für Wildtierrettung, Reinigung der Landschaft, Kontrollen und besseren Tierschutz bereitgestellt werden.

 

Tiere dürfen nicht aus Spaß am Töten leiden. Die Natur ist keine Müllkippe. Hunde sind keine Werkzeuge, die man vernachlässigen darf.

Σταματήστε τη σκληρότητα της άσκεπτης θήρας στην Κύπρο

 

Σε ολόκληρη την Κύπρο, ωδικά πτηνά και άλλα μικρά ζώα πυροβολούνται, τραυματίζονται και συχνά αφήνονται να υποφέρουν. Αυτό δεν έχει σχέση με την αναζήτηση τροφής, ούτε με υπεύθυνη διαχείριση της άγριας ζωής, ούτε με προστασία της φύσης. Πολύ συχνά μοιάζει με άσκοπη θανάτωση ζώων για διασκέδαση.

 

Την ίδια στιγμή, άδεια κυνηγετικά φυσίγγια μένουν πεταμένα σε χωράφια και φυσικές περιοχές. Ρυπαίνουν το τοπίο και δείχνουν σοκαριστική αδιαφορία για το περιβάλλον και την άγρια ζωή. Μερικοί ισχυρίζονται ακόμη ότι οι κάλυκες «σαπίζουν μόνοι τους», σαν να αποτελεί αυτό δικαιολογία για την εγκατάλειψή τους στη φύση.

 

Η ίδια έλλειψη ευθύνης φαίνεται σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις και στον τρόπο που διατηρούνται κάποια κυνηγετικά σκυλιά. Ιδίως το καλοκαίρι, μερικά από αυτά κρατούνται σε απαράδεκτες και εξευτελιστικές συνθήκες: με ανεπαρκή σκιά, στάσιμο νερό, γυμνό έδαφος και ανεπαρκή καθημερινή φροντίδα.

 

Γι’ αυτό η Κύπρος χρειάζεται φόρο περίπου 3 € ανά κυνηγετικό φυσίγγιο. Αυτό δεν θα απαγορεύσει το κυνήγι, αλλά θα καταστήσει ακριβότερη την επιπόλαιη χρήση όπλων και θα βοηθήσει στη χρηματοδότηση της περίθαλψης τραυματισμένων ζώων, του καθαρισμού της φύσης, των ελέγχων και της αυστηρότερης προστασίας των ζώων.

 

Τα ζώα δεν πρέπει να υποφέρουν για διασκέδαση. Η φύση δεν είναι χωματερή. Τα σκυλιά δεν είναι εργαλεία που μπορεί κανείς να παραμελεί.

This problem is not just environmental; it is deeply personal to me because the wildlife affected is part of what makes our island unique. Preserving this natural beauty is vital not only for us but for future generations.

To address this issue, I propose a tax of about 3 €/cartridge on hunting ammunition, similar to excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol. This isn't an infringement on hunters' rights; rather, it's a measure to promote responsible hunting, reduce unnecessary animal suffering, and provide funding for environmental protection initiatives.

The funds generated from this tax could support the cleaning of polluted areas, the rehabilitation of wounded wildlife, and educational programs focused on sustainable hunting practices. It can enable us to manage our natural resources wisely and ensure that hunting practices today do not destroy the environments of tomorrow.

Incorporating such a tax could potentially save countless animal lives and significantly reduce environmental damage. Cyprus can lead by example, demonstrating that hunting and conservation can coexist harmoniously if approached with responsibility.
