As a keen user of the internet, I recently noticed a highly noticable change in the tabs of my browser with version 132. The once subtle audio-content icon has now been replaced with a very-high contrast icon. This seems like a minor change, but as someone who spends hours each day on the web, this change has undesirably altered my browsing experience.
Now when I navigate tabs and web pages, that glaringly contrasting audio icon is very distracting. Searching for a solution led me to the realization that there is no way for me to revert to the old, subtle icon: searching "icon" in about:config provided no results like browser.legacy.tab.icon.Audio, nor was there any syntax for changing that icon via browser themes in a manifest.json file.
The freedom to personalize and control our digital profiles is a critical cornerstone of the internet user's experience. This lack of choice affects not just me but millions of internet users worldwide on a day-to-day basis.
The solution lies in the implementation of a browser Boolean pref like browser.legacy.tab.icon.Audio that allows users to choose the icon of their preference. Furthermore, a syntax for browser theme changes in the application manifest (manifest.json) could be added.
When the internet space is becoming more and more tailored towards personalized experiences, we should not let such minor yet impactful details be overlooked. Let's return autonomy over our digital space back to the hands of each user.
So, join me in calling on Mozilla to implement this functional preference that allows the preference of legacy audio tab icons. Add your voice, sign this petition, and let's make the internet a more personally optimized space.
