On Feb. 10, 2017, Senator Dan Johnson, Co-Chair of the Interim Committee on Children At Risk/Faith Healing, presented Idaho Senate Pro-Tem Brent Hill with a letter outlining 5 options for addressing the religious exemptions. Those options ranged from doing nothing, expanded mandated reporting, repealing the exemptions or allowing exemptions for all religious beliefs and practices. A decision on how the legislature was going to proceed was supposed to be announced on Feb. 15, 2017 . Instead of a decision, the buck was passed, once again, to Senator Dan Johnson. Senator Hill asked Senator Johnson to come up with language for two bills to see what they would look like. They are keeping those two options for a bill under wraps. While the Idaho Legislature stalls, more children have died in Followers of Christ faith healing families. Idaho is still a safe destination for extreme religious sects that deny their children's right to live. The attached story is an example of how one elected official wants to protect children and has his hands tied. While the other, a coroner in the county where most Idaho faith deaths occur, is protecting the faith healing parents that neglect children. Please write or call Idaho legislators asking them to repeal the religious exemptions for non-support, manslaughter and neglect of children. It is time for legislators to quit stalling and take immediate action to protect all Idaho children.
